Golf Course Maintenance

Claude Ferguson - Course Superintendent

Claude has a long successful background in golf course management.   We have seen much of his expertise over the past few years.   Remember that we had a killing freeze in the 2007 spring, followed by a major draught in the summer & early fall.  BUT, our course has been in excellent shape regardless.

The dog days of summer have arrived again for this year.  This means we will be spending an extreme amount of time closely monitoring the greens.  Please bear with us in doing this.  Since the greens are under a lot of stress, please remember to repair your ball marks and others you may see.

Items of Note:   We will start aerifying tees and fairways as soon as possible so as to have ample time in their healing before the Jacks – N – Jennies tournament. We are also spending an extreme amount of time in cleaning up from storm damage that we seem to keep encountering, but the rainfall has also been very beneficial in keeping the course in its present shape.

Just a reminder that the golf course needs a lot of special attention in summertime heat.  We have our mowers out mowing the rough most hours of the day.  Please keep in mind that they try to stay out of the way of players, but that is not always a possibility.  Also as the temperatures rise, we will need to spray the greens with water in order to keep them from burning up.  This process only takes a couple of minutes per hole, so please be patient while you are waiting to hit your shot into the green.

If we all continue to rake the bunkers, fill divots with sand & repair ball marks on the greens, we can keep the course in very playable condition for everyone.  Full sand bottles can be picked up at two different locations:  by A hole's green & by 12's green.

The 2008 ICE STORM

The Golf Course was not a pretty place to see with the damage that occurred from the original ice storm, and that was followed quickly with three more storms.  I knew from past experience what kind of task that was ahead in cleaning up the Golf Course, and set my plan to clean it up.   I told my staff what to expect and what the goals were to accomplish this feat.   Remember they are not in the disaster-cleanup program, but in the art of taking care of a Golf Course.  All of them should be given a hand for the hard work they are doing.
